Niki Avila BIO - Nikki Avila Practice Manager & Lead Registered Veterinary Technician Niki began her career in Veterinary Medicine in 1995, after taking ROP classes in veterinary assistance. Since childhood, her life long dream has always been to work with animals, or to become a zoo ambassador like Joan Embry. Before obtaining her RVT license, Niki majored in animal biology and zoology, completing a semester in Kenya, Africa, focusing on wildlife conservation. Niki has spent most of her career in specialty hospitals focused in Internal Medicine and Advanced Imaging (MRI’s and CT Scans). She enjoys building long term relationships and friendships with clients, teaching technical staff, and mentoring veterinary interns and residents. Niki has been published for her continued work partnering with a biotech company in a Type I diabetes reversal study. The study uses pancreatic stem cells (neo-islets) to reverse diabetes in dogs, and the hope is to trial this in humans to reverse type 1 Diabetes. http://symbiocelltech.com/news. Niki wanted to use her skills as a RVT to restructure veterinary practices, and to help train and elevate the medicine and standards of care performed in practice day to day. Niki resides in Temecula with her boyfriend and beloved bonus kids, her most perfect Australian Shepherds Teller and Quill, and her two bratty cats Emmitt and Jeter. In her downtime, Niki keeps busy with kids' sports, gardening, traveling, and staying active with her family and Aussies. Later that year she began working as a veterinary assistant and learned to draw blood, place IV catheters, assist in exams, vaccinations, and routine spay and neuters. In 2002, Lauren started in the specialty veterinary field as an animal dermatology technician. For six years she worked as the only technician in her department before moving on to the ER and ICU, where she continued learning new skills in emergency medicine. In late 2008, Lauren took a hiatus in her professional life, but was back in October of 2010 when she began working at Pacific Beach Veterinary Clinic as a receptionist and vet tech, and was eventually promoted to assistant manager. She worked there until early 2021. When Lauren isn’t at the clinic, she is home tending to her own little farm. Lauren has been married to her long-time boyfriend of fourteen years for four years now, and together they have five French Bulldogs, one Boston terrier, three cats, two birds, one fish tank and fifteen lizards. Hoolihan’s personal story - Keep reaching for your dreams! At age fourteen, Dr. Hoolihan sent out a letter to all the veterinarians within a five-mile biking radius of his home in San Diego, CA. The summer before entering high school, he wanted to volunteer his services and shared his dream of being a future veterinarian. He professed that he had a huge love for animals and "that if given the chance, (he) could aid you enormously." Thankfully, one veterinarian out of TEN answered his letter. Her name was Dr. Diane Defenbaugh. She gave Dr. Hoolihan the opportunity to at first volunteer in her veterinary hospital, then work part-time throughout his high school career to gain veterinary technician skills and learn about the veterinary industry. Dr. Defenbaugh gave Dr. Hoolihan a chance when no others would, and it literally changed the direction of his life. At Point Loma High School, Dr. Hoolihan was senior class president and in his senior yearbook, there is a picture of him and a yearbook article entitled, "I'm going to be a veterinarian; it's the only thing I've ever wanted to do". After attending UC Davis as an undergraduate, Dr. Hoolihan applied to veterinary schools around the country for three years before being accepted to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, which is regularly ranked as the best veterinary school in the country. He is one of the fortunate few that was accepted and he graduated in 1997. He was then accepted to an internship in emergency and critical care at Southpaws Veterinary Referral Center in the Washington, DC area. He has been practicing veterinary medicine ever since. This extraordinary chance altered the trajectory of his life, and Dr. Hoolihan has paid it forward by mentoring PIMA student interns, undergraduates interested in veterinary medicine, and even veterinary school interns over the years. Working alongside multiple trainers she had acquired lots of tools and knowledge to help assist in the training of her own horse, Jodi, a nine year old AQHA mare. In hopes to better assist herself in getting better equipped for the veterinary field, she worked at Dogtopia, a doggy daycare facility, to gain more experience working with the smaller animals. While working in Dogtopia, she started her Veterinary Assistant program with MiraCosta College in 2019. She graduated with her certificate later on that year, and then pursued a six month internship with the Lake Elsinore Animal Hospital. From there, Madison has gained more knowledge being a Veterinary Assistant in the Oceanside area since early 2020. Madison currently resides in Murrieta with her dog; Charlye, an eight year old rescue. If Madison is not in the clinic she will most likely be hanging out with either of her two fur babies. CHRIS HOOLIHAN - DR. CHRIS HOOLIHAN Owner | Veterinarian Dr. Christopher Hoolihan is a 4th generation native San Diegan. He is a 1988 graduate of Point Loma High School, and in 1992, he graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a Bachelor's Degree in Comparative Literature and a Minor in Music. Dr. Hoolihan earned his degree from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. He completed a rotating internship in Emergency and Critical Care/Internal Medicine/Cardiology and Surgery at Southpaws Veterinary Referral Center in Virginia in 1998. From 1998 to 2007, Dr. Hoolihan predominantly practiced veterinary emergency medicine in San Diego, with a brief stint as a cardiology resident in Los Angeles, before moving into general practice. Dr. Hoolihan and his wife owned Pacific Beach Veterinary Clinic from 2009-2019. After selling that practice, Dr. Hoolihan stayed on as the PBVC Medical Director until April 2020. In March of 2020, just as the COVID-19 Pandemic hit, he and his wife purchased Penasquitos Pet Clinic and in November of that same year, they purchased Bonsall Pet Hospital. Dr. Hoolihan and his wife, Shana, always had a dream of opening a north county coastal veterinary hospital. For years they knew that so many people from all walks of their life would bring their furry family to see Dr. Hoolihan- if only he worked closer to home. Oceanside has a special place in Dr. Hoolihan’s life because he has been performing as Daddy Warbucks in “Annie” at the Star Theatre, just down the block from Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital, for the past fifteen years. She then furthered her training at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital in Irvine where she completed a year long small animal medicine and surgery internship. As a veterinarian, Dr. Dorsey enjoys working with pet owners on preventative medicine and education. She has a special interest in dermatology, ophthalmology, pain management and soft tissue surgery. Following 4 years working at a small animal hospital in North Carolina, she followed a life-long dream of moving to the Pacific Northwest in the summer of 2016. She worked as the Medical Director at a small animal veterinary hospital outside Portland, OR for 3 years, followed by a transition to Regional Medical Director overseeing multiple hospitals in the Southern California region in 2020, while still continuing to provide support to hospitals in Washington, Oregon, and California. Through multi-clinic support and leadership, she has been able to pursue a passion for mentorship of new veterinary graduates, students, interns, and technicians. LAURA ROBINSON - DR. LAURA ROBINSON VETERINARIAN Dr. Laura Robinson was born and raised in Southern California. She received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology from University of California, Santa Barbara in 2014 and then went on to receive her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Western University in 2019. She received the "Dean's Award" her senior year, which is the highest achievement given to one person in the graduating class. Her areas of interest include Nutrition, Dermatology, and Surgery. One of her favorite parts of veterinary medicine is the problem-solving aspect of it, putting together the clinical signs with the diagnostic tests to figure out what is going on with her patients. She loves to see the improvement her patients make once treatments are finished and loves to build relationships with her clients and interact with them and their beloved pets. One of her favorite quotes is by Anatole France, which says “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” Dr. Robinson is a huge rescue advocate and has fostered and found homes for more than a dozen dogs. Dr. Laura Robinson lives in Oceanside with her grey tabby cat Artemis, and her shepherd mix Maple. On her off days, Dr. Robinson enjoys going to the beach and getting outdoors, spending time with her family and friends, and traveling. She has been to over 16 countries ranging from Thailand, Australia, and South Africa. She also enjoys watching and playing sports and has even competed in local kickball and volleyball leagues, as well as flag football, softball, volleyball and riding equestrian. Dr. Robinson is a member of AVMA, SCVMA, CVMA, and is an USDA accredited veterinarian.
